Cops summoned to quell campus protests

2012-02-14 07:13

A large police contingent has been called in to the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville campus following clashes between students protesting over residence conditions and security.

Students were stoning cars entering the campus and blocking the road with burning tyres and rubble this morning, with university staff being turned back by police because of the dangerous situation.

There were unconfirmed reports that one person had been injured when a car was stoned.

Students are understood to have begun the protests over, among others, the lack of ablution facilities in the residences and overcrowding.

Initial police units on the scene were reinforced by members of the riot unit, who attempted to disperse the protesters.

Attempts to secure comment from the university management have not been successful.

It is not clear whether the learning will take place on the campus today or whether the clashes will spread to the Howard College campus.
