Cosatu, ANC agree to put e-tolling on hold

Cosatu and the ANC have agreed to put on hold the implementation of e-tolling to allow the joint task team to explore funding options.

The two allies met in Johannesburg this afternoon to discuss the implementation of e-tolling, which was supposed to kick in on Monday if the attempt to interdict it at the North Gauteng High Court failed.

Cosatu secretary-general Zwelinzima Vavi posted a message on Twitter, saying “Cosatu & ANC leadership agreed to postpone implementation date for e-tolls by (a) month to allow task team more time to explore alternative funding”.

The agreement was confirmed in a joint statement.

The joint ANC-Cosatu task team was set up to investigate funding options as there is public objection to the user-pay option.

Vavi would not say earlier today whether an alternative funding strategy had been found, saying this afternoon’s meeting would discuss the matter.

He had also said it would be a “political blunder” if the ANC failed to respond to the public outcry over the implementation of the unpopular toll.

The decision on whether to honour the agreement lies with government.

Cosatu has postponed its planned protest action against e-tolling in light of the agreement, it said in a statement.
