In a move that is likely to inflame tensions in Cosatu, the labour federation’s central executive committee has rejected the request of nine affiliated unions for a special national congress.

The unscheduled meeting of the federation’s extended leadership, which was shunned by the nine unions, declined the request for a special congress to discuss the political crisis within Cosatu and to elect new leaders.

Cosatu acting general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali told reporters in Joburg today that the decision was made at yesterday’s meeting after it received a report from union presidents and general secretaries in the middle of last month.

Unions that support suspended Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi were hoping to use the special indaba to save him from expulsion, but the decision dashed these hopes.
