Cosatu backs Semenya and demands a probe

2009-09-29 09:37

THE Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has passed a

resolution declaring its support for Caster Semenya.

The federation said it disapproved of the manner in which Semenya

was treated by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and

Athletics South Africa (ASA).

Before the resolution was passed, Popcru president Cedric Cebekhulu

called for the immediate resignation of ASA president Leonard Chuene.

Some delegates asked the media and IAAF to apologise for the

perceived mistreatment of Semenya.

Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities,

Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya said: “We need to show and voice our support for

Caster. Her human rights were violated and therefore I think congress cannot end

without us saying something about it.”

NUM’s Madoda Sambatha said that Chuene’s resignation should not be

the end of a probe into what happened to Semenya. Chuene has insisted he will

not resign.

Skhumbuzo Mbewu, a Samwu shop steward, called for Cosatu to improve

its relations with the sporting fraternity so as not to trail behind in matters

connected to sports.
