Cosatu is better off without Vavi

It is interesting to see how the South African media, never known for its support for trade unions in general or for Cosatu in particular, has overwhelmingly come out in support of Zwelinzima Vavi who, for some years, has appeared to be the personal owner of Cosatu.

Without a doubt, his dismissal, which has followed the expulsion of Numsa, also apparently under personal ownership in the shape of Vavi’s friend Irvin Jim, has made those who never liked the liberation of South Africa from apartheid deliriously happy.

Vavi has been touted as a great leader of the working class – but what has he achieved and where have his energies, and the energies of Cosatu, been concentrated?

On e-tolls. Hardly the biggest concern of workers faced with the casualisation of labour through labour brokers.

And talking of property, why did Cosatu need new headquarters?

Hopefully, with this arrogant and self-centred man out of the way, Cosatu will be able to concentrate on the core issues of defending the working class against predatory employers and landlords.
