Cosmos take aim at United

2013-03-13 12:41

Jomo Cosmos assistant coach Gerald Mtshali believes the Nedbank Cup game against United FC on Saturday is a much-needed break from their league programme.

The two National First Division teams meet in the last 16 of the tournament at Makhulong Stadium at 3pm.

The former PSL outfit comes into the game on the back of a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Witbank Spurs in league action over the past weekend and Mtshali said they would use the Nedbank Cup to recharge their batteries.

“We have not been doing well in the league and maybe a good run in the cup competition will boost our confidence. I don’t think it will distract us from the bigger picture of trying to get back to the PSL,” said Mtshali.

The two teams played to a 2-2 draw in their league encounter earlier in the season.

Veteran goalkeeper Avril Phali also agreed with his coach that they needed to do well in the cup. But he conceded it would not be easy against an equally capable United, who were held to a goalless stalemate at home by Milano United.

“I think we have players who can do the job for us but it won’t be easy. But at least we know what we are coming up against, unlike in the previous round,” said Phali.

He said a win over United would go a long way in turning their season around. Cosmos are in the 11th position in the 16-club league, while United occupy seventh spot.
