Councillor under fire for playing games during budget debate

2013-05-31 11:21

A Cape Town councillor could face disciplinary action for playing a card game on her laptop during the city’s budget debate.

The social and early childhood development mayoral committee member, Suzette Little, was reportedly seen playing the game as councillors debated the budget on Wednesday.

The Cape Argus reported today that ANC councillor Koos Bredenhand alerted other councillors to what he had seen, resulting in the city’s media team sending text messages to councillors in the chamber to advise Little to stop playing.

She apparently immediately stopped playing and replaced the game with columns of the city’s budget.

Speaker Dirk Smit told the newspaper that he would investigate the matter to determine whether Little had contravened the code of conduct or rules of council.

He said if any transgression was found, the matter would be referred to the disciplinary committee.
