Court grants gospel artist bail

Gospel singer Lusanda Mcinga was granted bail by the Butterworth Magistrates Court today after her arrest on an assault charge, Eastern Cape police said.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the 47-year-old musician was released on R500 bail and would appear in court again on December 9.

She was charged with assault, kidnapping and robbery.

Mcinga, who lives in Mthatha, was arrested yesterday after she and accomplices apparently assaulted a man thought to be selling pirated CDs.

On Friday, they allegedly took him to a veld in Butterworth, where he was beaten up. His cellphone was also stolen.

Manatha said the 25-year-old man suffered minor injuries. Police were investigating whether he was indeed selling pirated CDs.

Earlier information that Mcinga had been arrested in connection with a hijacking turned out to be incorrect, Manatha said.

He said police were unsure how many people took part in Friday’s assault, and investigations were continuing.
