Court order restrains protesting Wits students

2009-09-17 09:52

Wits University has been granted a court order in the South Gauteng

High Court against a group of students who have been disrupting lessons for the

past three days.

If the students continue with the disruption, they can be arrested

and held in contempt of court.

The court has granted an order interdicting and restraining

students from disrupting lectures and intimidating other students and staff

entering or leaving the institution’s premises or any of its buildings.

The order also restrains students from damaging property.

The university will institute disciplinary action against all

students who have been identified in contravening the university’s rules.

Members of the Wits senior executive team spent the most part of yesterday in

consultation with representatives of the protesting student group, discussing

the points raised in a memorandum handed to management. Discussions continued

this morning.
