Cruising with J9: Dear Car Thieves

2011-03-16 07:17

To the three men in the black VW Golf IV – last night you tried to steal in the wrong street.

Everything happens for a reason. Call it paranoia when my boyfriend triple checks the cars to see if they are locked.

But you can’t blame him, he’s been a victim of car theft before.

Perhaps it was really stupid of him to listen to his instincts and to your car creeping down the street and then hiding behind the wall as you stopped the car in front of our gate.

He became suspicious when you reversed and idled around the corner. Later he told me the sound of the sick engine in your car is what made him step back and listen.

You see, Mr Black-Golf-IV driver, we’re cautious and paranoid.

But most of all, we’re “gatvol” of crime and people bullying us. We’re tired of being victimised.

Sadly, and dangerously so, we don’t run to safety or turn a blind eye.

We protect what is ours and don’t allow others to take what we’ve worked so hard for.

I’m glad our friend who lives on the same property shares our sentiments and thinks on his feet. You see, Mr Driver, he is tired of all the crime in the area too.

I wish I could have seen your accomplice’s face when he saw my friend and boyfriend walk towards him, catching him red-handed breaking into our neighbour’s old Toyota.

I wish I could see the look on your face, Mr Driver, when my friend picked up a rock and hurled it against the back door of your car, leaving a big dent.

We hope you won’t be stupid and that you realise you can’t come back to our street because we’ll be waiting for you now.

I know if you and your friends were armed, things could have been so different. But I hope you realise how fed up we are – that we would run out and stand up for ourselves without any weapons of destruction.

Even the owners of the car you tried to steal came running out with sticks and bats. Please take note: you’re not welcome on our street.

My other neighbours might ignore the commotion in the street and peep out through their curtains to see what the noise is about, but not us.
We’ll defend what’s ours. We can only hope you won’t return.
