Cruising with J9 – I heart the FT-86

2011-10-06 11:39

For the past few months local manufacturers have been enticing the media with what’s to come at the Johannesburg International Motor Show.

I’ve been like a child counting down sleeps and days on my calendar, along with some milk and cookies.

Ok, make that a glass of red wine and endless ramblings of torque with the boys.

Two days ago, I even took out my flat shoes and most comfortable jeans to pace the Joburg Show Grounds – and that’s so unlike me.

The FT-86 is the ultimate evolution of the legendary Hachi-Roku – which is the root of my love for cars.

Anyone who is a real Toyota fan will know its meaning and also know who Takumi is. It’s the Japanese term for the Toyota Trueno Gt-Apex, chassis code AE86.

Think of the popular animation series in which Takumi, a tofu-delivery boy, drives his father’s Hachi-Roku.

Being able to see the FT-86 is like meeting Takumi in person. And don’t even think of telling me Takumi was just a cartoon character, because that’s like telling a child there’s no Easter Bunny or Santa Claus ...
