Cruising with J9: Thought we’re heading out of the recession? Think again

2011-04-29 14:51

I nearly fell off my chair when I read that we’re due for yet another fuel increase next month – 29 cents per litre to be exact.

I feel like crying because all these inflation costs are depressing and rapidly depleting my bank account.

In a space of just a week, a pack of 2.5kg sugar went up by R5 – and that’s just the cheapest brand on the grocery store shelf.

My boyfriend and I try to service our own cars as they are older models.

Changing oil and filters at home is much cheaper than having to pay someone else labour costs.

We needed to buy a new brand of oil and I was quoted about R800 for five litres.

I thought it was insane until I phoned around looking for a better quote. The same brand of oil was about R400 cheaper at another store.

If it isn’t enough that we have to pay such exorbitant prices, some people try to rip you off as well, just because you’re a woman.

Budgets are becoming really tight. After all the monthly debit orders have been taken, groceries are paid and the car’s tank has been filled, there’s nothing much left for a lady to enjoy herself.

If anyone thought we were recovering from the recession, they’re wrong. It seems like we’re headed right back there.

The only good thing is that at times like these, when all prices are going up, something has to come down.

Perhaps second-hand cars could once again be picked up at ridiculous prices. At least I hope so.

I hope there will be some relief and that prices on everything won’t continue to rise.
