Crunch time for Pirates

2013-04-17 13:14

It is win or bust for Orlando Pirates if they hope to get their league campaign back on track. With seven points separating them from log leaders Kaizer Chiefs, Pirates need three points to get closer to their rivals.

Anything less than a victory will all but surrender the title to Chiefs, who will have some breathing space at the top.

But it won’t be easy against equally-determined Free State Stars, who are also hoping to arrest their recent spate of poor results.

Limping Pirates go back to the scene where they were walloped by little-known Maluti FET College.

Pirates visit struggling Stars at Charles Mopeli, where they lost 4-1 to Maluti in February.

The two teams have not been getting results recently, with Pirates having gone five league games without a victory. Stars, on the other hand, have also gone six games without a win.

Both team will be without influential players because of injuries and suspension.

While Pirates will be minus Thabo Matlaba, Andile Jali and Oupa Manyisa, who are all nursing an assortment of injuries, Stars will also be missing Dove Wome and Lehlohonolo Thebekang due to suspension.

In Cape Town, bottom of the log Chippa United’s survival quest continues when they host Moroka Swallows at Philippi Stadium.

Last week, Chippa announced their sixth coach of the season in Mark Harris and the Englishman has a daunting task of saving the Cape side from relegation.

A loss against Swallows will take Chippa closer and closer back to the National First Division next season.

» Other fixtures: Bidvest Wits vs Platinum Stars (Bidvest Stadium); Maritzburg United vs Golden Arrows (Harry Gwala); AmaZulu vs Bloemfontein Celtic (Moses Mabhida); Mamelodi Sundowns vs University of Pretoria (Loftus)

All matches kick off at 7.30pm.
