South Africa’s premier rugby tournament kicks off on Friday, but it has lost some of its past lustre. Khanyiso Tshwaku previews its six contenders

In a bygone era, the Currie Cup, through its various sponsorship names, was the pinnacle of the South African rugby season.

Even with the introduction of Super Rugby, the Currie Cup thrived and produced some excellent rugby.

However, with the expansion of Super Rugby, the premier local competition lost some of its sparkle.

And with the crammed international schedule, a Romeo had to die and the Currie Cup was sacrificed.

The show has to go on though.
