DA can’t claim to care for women

2011-05-21 11:35

Having three women on a poster to reflect gender equality is an insult to the struggle for women’s liberation.

Women are not tokens to be showcased to win votes.

Women are completely unrepresented in Premier Helen Zille’s provincial cabinet.

Patricia de Lille was only brought in as an MEC as part of a political deal.

Zille has no genuine faith in our capacity to lead and to make strategic decisions.

The fact that she is able to afford botox does not mean that women under the DA leadership are treated as equals.

The fact that Lindiwe Mazibuko, national spokesperson for the DA, speaks with a “model C” accent does not mean that women under the DA leadership are treated as equals.

Incidentally, both the botox and the accent issues are only possible because of the liberation brought about by the ANC.

The ANC addresses the substantive needs of women.

Gender parity is regarded so seriously that a national department has been established to address the challenges experienced by women and children.

Crimes against women and children are regarded as a priority and the jail sentences are heavy.

A minimum wage for domestic workers has been introduced to curb the exploitation of women.

Programmes are in place to increase the number of child-care facilities to free women to engage in productive activity.

The employment of women in the public and the private sectors is legislated and monitored. In fact, 50% of the ANC’s candidates for the election campaign are women.

This goes to show that the ANC genuinely works to improve the conditions of women through both its policies and its actions.
