DA complains about Joburg tariff hikes

2011-05-04 07:46

The DA in Gauteng has written an open letter to Joburg city manager Mavela Dlamini to complain about proposed tariff hikes for 2011/2012.

Democratic Alliance councillor Vasco da Gama said a proposed 7% increase in property rates and refuse removal was above the inflation level, while proposed increases for water and sewerage were between 6 and 7%.

“There is no excuse for increases above inflation overall,” Da Gama wrote in his letter to Dlamini.

Da Gama said these increases were proposed in Joburg council papers and available on the City of Joburg website.

He said proposed electricity price increases would range between 8%, and up to 31% for businesses.

“These are far in excess of what has been declared by the mayor in press briefings and the public announcements by the spokespersons, where so-called averages of 16% have been mentioned and is included in the report,” he said.

The City of Joburg was not immediately available for comment.
