DA leader harassed during hospital inspection

DA leader for Limpopo, Desiree van der Walt, was harassed when she visited a local hospital for a routine inspection on Human Rights Day.

She arrived at the Ga-Kgapane Hospital in Modjadjiskloof, near Tzaneen, to conduct a routine visit in her capacity as member of the Limpopo council’s portfolio committee for health for the DA.

According to Van der Walt, conditions in the hospital are shocking, as the patients have no food – a situation that has been steadily worsening since last October.

“I saw patients’ relatives bringing them Kentucky (Fried Chicken) and Tropika (juice),” she told Beeld newspaper.

A security guard told Van der Walt that “only the governing party can visit the hospital”, and ran ahead of her to slam doors and warn patients not to talk to her.

“The security guards refused to leave my side. They have no right to treat me like a criminal. I have every right to visit the hospital, I’m a member of the provincial legislature,” Van der Walt said.

Joe Maila, spokesperson for the province’s health department, denied that the hospital’s patients had no food.

“The DA arrived without an appointment. There were no managers there and the nursing staff felt overwhelmed by her visit.”

Van der Walt said she would raise the issue during a meeting at the Limpopo legislature today.
