DA questions Airbus deal

2009-12-10 10:51

The Democratic Alliance submitted access to information

applications on Tuesday to get details on the state aircraft procurement deal

which was cancelled after costs shot up from R17 billion to R47 billion.

DA spokesperson David Maynier said in a statement “new and murky

facts” had emerged since the deal was signed.

He wanted questions answered on the tender process, the defence

ministry allegedly advising against the deal and an alleged “dubious” black

economic empowerment agreement.

“The DA has, in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act

(Act No 2 of 2000), submitted access to information applications requesting

copies of documents relating to the deal to procure and develop Airbus A400M

transport aircraft for the South African Air Force,” said Maynier.

Access to information applications have been made to the presidency

and the departments of transport, defence, public enterprises, trade and

industry, government communications and the National Treasury.

The South African Air Force ordered a fleet of A320 planes from the

European aircraft maker, but then cancelled because it discovered that it did

not need them at the moment.
