DA to stay away from Cosatu

2012-05-15 08:57

The Democratic Alliance has agreed to end its march on Cosatu at least 50m from the trade union federation’s Braamfontein, Johannesburg building, a spokeswoman said.

The party’s Gauteng spokesperson Kelly Miller said today they would work with the police and wanted to ensure the safety of all protesters.

Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said police would lead the march, scheduled to end on the lawns of the Johannesburg Civic Theatre.

The theatre is across the road from Cosatu’s new Braamfontein headquarters.

“We did a security assessment and decided to reroute the marchers to a neutral venue,” Minnaar said.

DA leader Helen Zille, youth leader Makashule Gana, parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko and national spokesperson Mmusi Maimane would be part of the march and address the crowd.

The march is to protest against Cosatu’s opposition to the youth wage subsidy, a policy that, the DA says, could create 423 000 jobs for young, unemployed South Africans.
