Daegu medallists line up for Diamond League

2011-09-08 14:40

South Africa’s Caster Semenya is one of the 52 medallists from the IAAF World Championships in Daegu who will line up at the Wetklasse Zurich Diamond League meet tonight.

Semenya, who won silver in the 800m at the World Championships, will continue her rivalry with Mariya Savinoza, the Russian who snatched the title from the South African mid-distance runner in a dramatic finish on Sunday.

Other South Africans who will be in action tonight are javelin thrower and Daegu bronze medallist Sunette Viljoen as well as 3 000m steeplechase and SA record holder Ruben Ramolefi.

However, the spotlight at the Switzerland event will fall on sprinters Yohan Blake and Walter Dix, who both finished on the podium in South Korea in the past week. Blake, of Jamaica, is the new 100m champion.

He will face off with his compatriot Asafa Powell who has just recovered from a hamstring injury that kept him out of the global meet last week.

Kenyan steeplechaser and world champion Ezekiel Kemboi is among a few athletes who stand a good chance of clinching the prestigious prize as he is leading the standings in his event.

South Africa’s Semenya (third-placed) and 400m hurdler LJ van Zyl (second-placed) are not far off in their respective events.

The Weltklasse meet is the first of the two finals of the 2011 Diamond League, which offers individual winners a whopping $40 000 (R285 856) and a “diamond” trophy. The 14-meet series began in May.
