Dance at the festival

2010-05-29 06:32

Dada Masilo’s searing interpretations of Carmen and Romeo and Juliet have reeled in audiences – even those who don’t usually watch contemporary dance.

This year the pocket dynamo turns her hand to Swan Lake but subverts it, in true Masilo style.

This year’s Standard Bank Young Artist for Dance, Mlu Zondi, mashes up dance, performance art, theatre, video and installations in his progressive hybrid work Cinema – set to be a mind-blowing interactive ride.

For a more indigenous flavour, sample the foot-stomping exuberance of the Eastern Cape Cultural Ensemble.

Also look out for Vincent Mantsoe’s Khoisan-inspired San, Acty Tang’s butoh-inflected Inscrutable, the provocative Mamela Nyamza’s Hatched, Musa Hlatshwayo’s “multimedia installation choreo-poem” Moses, the sensual flamenco of Sentimentios, the pantsula jive of Bongani Linda’s Pantsula for Life, and Cape Town City Ballet and Cape Philharmonic delivering the exquisite Carmen and Ballet Bonanza.
