Hollywood is hot on the heels of South African DJ Darren “Whackhead” Simpson after he impressed studio executives in his debut film role.

“The whole experience was surreal,” said an upbeat Simpson earlier today.

The popular 94.7 DJ was picked by The Walt Disney Company to lend his voice to their upcoming animation Planes: Fire and Rescue.

“When I got the call, I said: Hell yes.”

Simpson voices a loader (used on construction sites) called Drip – who is part of a group of five firefighters called the Smokejumpers. Drip and his crew are devoted to protecting historic Piston Peak National Park from a raging wildfire.

“Drip is an outgoing dude who’s always leaking oil and uses a skid-steer claw to clear fallen trees and brush.”

Simpson was given one afternoon and four hours to record the voice of his character. But he managed to do it in record time.

“I did it in an hour. The director was really impressed.”

The self-confessed “bad actor” said he rehearsed tirelessly leading up to the recording.

“I am not an animated person. And this character is exaggerated.”

Simpson’s voice will feature alongside comedian Dane Cook and Hollywood actress Julie Bowen, who plays Claire Dunphy on the sitcom Modern Family.

The first Planes movie grossed more than R2 billion worldwide and the film is hoping to reach the same success.

“My son loves the first movie. This is the one he falls asleep to,” said Simpson.
