The City of Cape Town accused the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) of disrupting a public meeting in Kosovo, Philippi last night.

“This is clearly part of their ongoing ungovernability campaign,” said Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille’s spokesman Solly Malatsi.

Malatsi said a group led by a man dressed in ANCYL attire started shouting and causing a disturbance just as De Lille was about to address the meeting.

He said the group grew so rowdy, the mayor had to abandon her speech. The police escorted the man out of the building.

Malatsi said this “orchestrated programme of disruption” had not stopped the city from sharing vital service-delivery-related information with the community.

He said the city resolved to distribute pamphlets as part of the “Know your community, know your contractor” campaign, which aimed to help them bring contractors to account for sanitation and solid-waste services in the area.

“They (the ANCYL) can rest assured their destructive mission will not succeed, nor deter the city from delivering the highest-possible services to all residents,” he said.

The ANCYL was not immediately available for comment.
