De-Vine cooking

2010-04-17 12:57

is what many of the Western Cape wine estates are built on – not only the root

of the vine but that of the family as well. Which probably explains why many

winemakers name their wines after family members.

Jonker family of the Weltevrede Wine Estate are not any different. The vineyard

– situated in the Robertson valley – has just released the cute duo Oupa and

Ouma Se Wyn, created from the full-sweet blend of Red Muscadel and Muscat de

Hambourg vines from their Oupa’s Vineyard.

Jonker family has made wine on the estate for four generations, and current

owner Philip Jonker’s passion for the land is evident.

grew up among the vines of Weltevrede. I played in the soil as a boy and so did

my father, grandfather and great-grandfather before me,” he says.

se Wyn, named after his great-grandfather, Klaas Jonker, was created using

grapes from Oupa’s Vineyard; while Ouma se Wyn, named after Philip’s

grandmother, Elizabeth Johanna Jonker, was made from a single Muscat de

Frontignan vineyard. Both are part of the estate’s Heritage range.

a family-orientated dessert wine release deserves a little home cooking to go

with it and Philip’s wife, Lindelize, has created a trio of recipes that

incorporate Oupa and Ouma se Wyn. These fortified wines and the food to eat with

them should leave fans of the good life as sated as founder Klaas, who was so

happy he called his farm Well-Satisfied.
