Dear Patrice and Futhi . . .

2011-09-10 09:44

Forgive our temerity in addressing you directly, but what happened in organised business this week is not good – either for established business or emerging black business.

Your leadership task Patrice Motsepe, now chairperson of the Black Business Council, is to quickly find out why it was so easy for black business people and professionals to feel so undermined that the course of business unity was wrecked.

Did the status quo not change?

Were leaders marginalised? Was it because corporates failed to implement employment equity or genuine black empowerment?

Your inbox, sir, is always full, but we hope that you will take time off from Sundowns to ensure that the diagnostic is done so that talks with Business Unity SA (Busa) can start as soon as possible.

Your constituents must be lifted above the personal – the issues are political, but they should not be egotistical.

To Futhi Mtoba, chairperson of Busa, you will need to make use of your abundant leadership skills to ensure that the wound is healed and that this gap is temporary.

The racial schism in business is not unexpected, but neither is it ineluctable. Finding the path back to unity will require frankness about the reasons it came asunder.

This includes how Busa relates to the state and how invested the organisation is in transformation.

We are convinced that under your leaderships, the paths need not permanently be parallel.
