Dear Steve Biko, we have failed you

2012-09-12 10:33

Today is a sad day because it marks the day you were snatched from us by Nazi sympathisers whose children continue to rule us through the Sunset Clause they concocted with our new rulers.

The friends of Gideon Nieuwoudt are now using the courts to stop us chanting our freedom songs, the very courts they denied you when they drove you over a thousand kilometres to your death.

The poor that you left have become poorer and more desperate. Those who murdered you and tried to destroy you are now smiling all the way to colourful holiday resorts with their spouses and children.

I write to apologise for the way your legacy has been reduced to rubble and your name cannibalised for self-seeking political ends.

The significance of your black consciousness message, dear Biko, has been altered to mean connections, tenders and affluence.

Our young men and women are losing hope because wise leadership and vision disappeared on the 12th of September 1977.

We have failed you, Biko, because today those who oppressed you and humiliated you are now telling us to forget about the past and move on.

Today we have a proliferation of silly associations referring to themselves as the “Born Frees”.

They do not know what it means to be born free; that it has nothing to do with 1994.

We have been rendered impotent by poverty of thought and crass materialism.

Wherever you are out there in the sky among the stars, we know you are looking down with tears in your eyes.

We have failed you Child of the Earth.

And we are sad.
