The world needs to pause and shift focus when senseless killings happen

Seeing the brutalised face of Mohamed Abu Khdeir, the Palestinian boy kidnapped and murdered by Jewish extremists, gave me a painful emotional shock.

His innocence behind his swollen face and his youth – it almost felt as if something in nature had failed.

In him I saw a brother worth protecting and worth preserving. His death reduces us all.

Brotherhood does not need explaining – it just is. It is what gives us confidence to pack our bags and head out to the world, assured that whithersoever we go, we will find people like ourselves, ready to help us find our way, happy to contribute to our experiences and our lives.

Our humanity is reduced each time we violate each other.

The trail of the Middle East conflict is too overwhelming to fathom. It has outlasted many gifted leaders.

The world needs to learn to pause and shift focus when senseless killings are happening in any part of our world and use the our collective political will and human bond to put an end to these problems.

We have reached a point where we must all rise above the complications of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that have kept this part of the world on its knees. We have to finally set a precedent.

As a world united in our resolve, we can bring needed and lasting solutions to our problems.
