Decision to withdraw proposed Sunday alcohol ban welcomed

Gauteng economic development MEC Nkosiphendule Kolisile’s decision to withdraw a proposal that would have banned alcohol sales in the province on Sundays has been welcomed.

Alcoholic beverage company Brandhouse Beverages spokesperson Sibani Mngadi said in a statement the decision was reached after a “democratic engagement process”.

This process included submissions from affected parties, including the alcohol industry and traders, on the draft liquor regulations.

“The genuine commitment to public consultation demonstrated by the department and the MEC in this process is much appreciated,” he said today.

The decision to continue allowing alcohol sales in Gauteng on Sundays would help promote economic growth and protect jobs in the hospitality, tourism, and small business sectors, among others.

Mngadi said Brandhouse remained committed to the fight against alcohol abuse, through programmes where government and business worked together to address the problem.

Brandhouse only traded with department-registered alcohol businesses.

“We are also investing additional resources to promote responsible alcohol trade among our customers in Gauteng and other provinces.”
