Deli-cious Bistro-style

Any excuse is all I need to eat and a new place in my ’hood – especially one that also sells delicious chorizo, cheese, pies and bread – is as good as any for a three-course lunch. Also my mother kept going out for milk and coming back two hours later after a breakfast/lunch/ coffee at Possums and telling me how I must, must, must review it. So here goes.

Possums Bistro and Deli, opposite the Jolly Roger pub (don’t let that put you off) in Parkhurst, is a great addition to the neighbourhood’s restaurant strip and might just give a few of the more over-priced joints a run for Joburgers’ eating-out money.

With tables outside and in, Possums gets the ambience just right. With tumbling piles of wicker baskets, bottles of interesting wine and champagne, tins of tomatoes and even a beaded goat on every available surface; if you are short of small talk you can eye out the place’s eclectic décor and use that as a conversation starter.

The tables are decorated with fresh cut flowers and sprigs of herbs, and the first thing the waitron brings is a carafe of water flavoured with mint, rosemary and lemon – what a delight.

The menu, printed on pieces of brown paper adding to the general sense of rustic, organic homeliness, includes a selection of platters.

We opted for the French Grocery Platter and were delighted to tuck into one of the tastiest sausages in sausage memory and delicious rillettes, a type of paté cooked in its own fat. What’s not to mop up with a baguette? We were glad we shared one platter, because our main courses were generous too, but I will be back for one of the other platters – all to myself.

The veal and ricotta meatballs on pasta were superb with just the right amount of bite and a creamy tomato base.

My companion had the mussels in fennel and orange broth – a unique, fresh flavour that she scooped up with slices of bread.

The eatery’s tagline is Food Embroidered by Imagination and it is certainly that – starting with high-quality, in-season produce.

Other things on the menu, which changes to keep up with the seasons, include a delicious fresh porcini pasta.

Luckily we had kept our pudding stomachs empty for the final course. I ordered the chocolate praline with the
rose-infused sorbet; decadent with the fragrant sorbet offsetting the solid, rich chocolate cake.

My lunch companion tucked into a slice of milk tart mousse cake with a dollop of crème fraiche.

The staff are friendly, but our waiter could have been more attentive though his colleagues were there when he was not.

Possums is a worthy addition to the culinary landscape that is likely to very quickly become a fixture on eating-out diaries.

It is good value for money and everything was tasty. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and from the deli you can get a Panini stuffed with cheese and cured meats or a home-made pie?and you can get the food for take-away.
