Democracy under attack

2015-02-22 17:00

The outrageous and degrading display put on by government at the state of the nation address in Parliament last week is a nail in the coffin for the democracy some like to lay claim to.

The unrest in the House was a direct result of the old ANC ethos that South Africa had to be made ungovernable to wrest power from the then all-powerful National Party government.

Bad habits die hard and that mentality has not been extinguished.

That the president of the country – who sadly is more often the president of the ANC than of South Africa – thought the fiasco was a joke to be laughed at, as the eyes of the world looked on, is a sad reflection of the woeful state of the nation.

Furthermore, the crass attempt to censor the proceedings by means of a “technical glitch” was something one would expect to see in the likes of Mad magazine, not in Parliament in South Africa – with a buffoon standing at the podium.

We must all work to achieve a revitalised democracy.

It must be free of the corrupt, nepotistic, self-enrichment mentality of the governing party, under which we are all oppressed.
