The Sea Point promenade in Cape Town now sports its very own rhinoceros.

It’s made up of a series of steel plates shaped as various parts of the animal.

The multiple elements are arranged to look like a whole rhino when seen from one angle.

It’s the work of Cape Town artist Andre Carl van der Merwe, who created it in an effort to shine the light on the reality of rhino poaching in the country.

As of July, 588 rhinos have been poached in the country this year.

Van der Merwe worked under the auspices of Art54 projects – a public-art initiative set up to facilitate the implementation of public art in Ward 54.

It was started by Elad Kirshenbaum and former Ward 54 councillor Beverley Schafer, who had observed the frustrations of artists who wanted to create art in public spaces.

As a work of art, Van der Merwe’s rhino has lofty precedence in contemporary South African history.

William Kentridge’s work Fire Walker is also made up of multiple parts and can be seen better from one side.

It is installed in Newtown, Joburg.

The Mandela Capture Monument in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, where the late Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962, was created by Marco Cianfanelli from multiple fragments of steel.

Van der Merwe’s installation is called Rhinosaur, which echoes the fate of the now extinct beast, and highlights the plight of the rhino.

We at #Trending think his work is worth all the hype it’s getting.
