Book Dash wants every child in South Africa to own 100 books before they turn five. Unfortunately, 83% of children in the poorest South African schools have fewer than 10 books at home. This is because books are expensive and sometimes hard to access, and are often not in the child’s home language. To overcome this, Book Dash has collaborated with South African writers, illustrators and designers to make books and distribute them for free. They’ve made 22 gorgeous, lovingly illustrated children’s books so far, but they’re aiming for a target of 15?000. These books tell empowering stories – stories that South African boys and girls can relate to. One of our favourites is Singing the Truth by Louwrisa Blaauw, Jade Mathieson and Bianca de Jong, which tells the story of iconic singer Miriam Makeba. Another is Queen of Soweto by Jessica Taylor, Mia du Plessis and Marli Fourie, which tells the story of pageant queen Basetsana Kumalo.– Grethe Koen
