Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who turns 83 next month, is cutting short his Scandinavian visit and will return home at the weekend.

Tutu is flying back to Cape Town “on the advice of his doctors and at the insistence of his family,” said his daughter, Reverend Mpho Tutu, executive director of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.

In a statement from Sweden, the Reverend Tutu said that her father was “exhausted”. She is due to accompany him home.

It is believed that Tutu was due to meet top government leaders in Denmark next week.

Tutu, who has battled cancer in the past and officially retired some years ago, still travels regularly.

For instance, in the past month, his travels have included trips to Bali, Honolulu, Lusaka and now Scandinavian countries.

He remains active in a series of global campaigns, often speaking out against human rights abuses.

Recent causes he has taken up include the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the rights of Aborigines in Australia and a global call against fossil fuels ahead of last week’s UN Climate Summit.

Tutu’s birthday celebration is traditionally a high-profile public affair, culminating in the Annual Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture.

The guest speaker at the prestigious event, to be held on his birthday on October 7 at the University of the Western Cape for the fourth consecutive year, is former Irish President Mary Robinson.
