Detained SA journos released

Two journalists from a Joburg radio station who were taken into custody in Swaziland today have been released.

Eyewitness News reporters Nastasya Tay and Tshepo Lesole were covering the run-up to planned mass protests in Manzini.

Tay and Lesole had been allowed to leave Manzini and were being escorted by police out of Manzini and taken to Mbabane.

AFP reported that five activists were arrested ahead of planned protests. Reporters in Swaziland said streets were quiet early today, with no immediate sign of demonstrations.

Observers had reported that police had been putting up road blocks throughout the country in recent days.

An anti-monarchy movement had gained momentum since the government declared a budget crisis and proposed freezing civil service wages.

A Facebook group called “April 12 Swazi Uprising” was started a few weeks ago to mobilise support for the protest.
