Development projects at the festival

The festival strives to give something back to the impoverished

surrounding communities.

One of the most successful development initiatives has

been Phezulu Stiltwalkers, a brainchild of Rhodes student Richard Antrobus.

Antrobus trained five township youths in walking and performing on stilts, and

their debut at last year’s festival was a massive success.

Other empowerment initiatives include the Remix Laboratory with a

residency of 100 community-based artists, and the Hands On! Masks Off! Workshops

sponsored by Business and Arts South Africa and the National Arts Council.

After last year’s row over the new Village Green Fair, a compromise

has been struck.

The main market remains at Rhodes, but the craft market at

Fiddler’s Green will sport a funky new chillout venue called the Urban Lounge,
