Dexter runs ANC Western Cape campaign

2013-03-03 10:00

Former Cope MP Phillip Dexter has been roped in to help run the ANC’s elections campaign in the Western Cape as it pushes to win the province back from the DA.

Dexter, who formally returned to the governing party at the beginning of last year, will be helping with “general communications for the elections campaign”, a source with knowledge of his role said.

Dexter has confirmed he is helping in the party’s provincial media and communications office “with press statements and messaging, a broad range of stuff”.

His role is also understood to include working on an elections communications strategy that could help the ANC defeat the governing DA in next year’s general elections.

Dexter resigned from the ANC and the SACP more than four years ago to join Cope and became a spokesman for the party and an MP after the 2009 general elections.

He later lost patience with divisions in the party and produced a scathing document on internal problems.

A source with knowledge of Dexter’s involvement said he was roped in to the ANC’s Western Cape structures by Deputy International Relations Minister Marius Fransman, who is also the ANC’s leader in the Western Cape.
