Before settling on the name Stimela, the group was called Kumasi, Splash and Adaye. They chose Stimela after they were stranded in Maputo, Mozambique, for three months. They eventually sold all their belongings to take a train back home. It is that train that gave them their name.

Ray Phiri was born of South African parents, but raised by a Malawian migrant stepfather. Ray uses his stepfather’s surname.

?Phiri started The Cannibals before Mpharanyane Radebe joined them as a vocalist.»?Highland Drifter spent 18 weeks at the top of the charts in Zimbabwe after it was banned immediately on release in South Africa.

?Phiri was arranger and guitarist on Graceland, Paul Simon’s Grammy Award-winning album.

?Seven of the band members died in an accident on the way from Kimberley after a performance in 1987 during the Unfinished Story Tour. Phiri was the sole survivor.
