Diego Rivera – Mural of Mexico

2011-10-28 09:40

Mexico’s mural tradition is long and notable. Historically, it is significant because of its political undertones and how artists used the art form to celebrate the socialist revolution in 1910.

The most celebrated of the Mexican mural painters is Diego Rivera, who developed his own style based on large, simplified figures and bold colours with an Aztec influence.

The mural above, En el Arsenal (In the Arsenal), depicts working-class heroine Tina Modotti holding an ammunition belt and facing two of her compatriots Julio Antonio Mella, in a light hat, and Vittorio Vidali (behind) in a black hat.

Rivera’s artist wife Frida Kahlo is depicted handing out arms to revolutionary workers.

The ultra-leftist of Soviet Russia, Leon Trotsky, lived with Rivera and Kahlo for several months while exiled in Mexico.
