Diepsloot 5 remain behind bars

2013-10-24 12:15

The five suspects arrested for the rape and murder of two Diepsloot toddlers will remain behind bars until their identities and DNA results have been verified.

Their case was adjourned to November 1 when they will inform the court whether they will apply for bail.

As the case was being heard inside court, a group of 50 Diepsloot residents protested outside the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court this morning, baying for the men’s blood.

The men have each been formally charged with two counts of murder, kidnapping and rape.

The names of the accused cannot be released as they are yet to plead to the charges.

A Diepsloot resident said the entire community was angry that the men might be given bail and everybody hoped by they would “rot in jail”.

The two mothers came face to face with the accused for the first time this morning and neither of them would speak to the media contingent outside court.

The mothers were accompanied by organisations including metalworkers’ union Numsa, political parties Agang SA and Congress of the People and the ANC Women’s League.

State prosecutor Matric Luphondo said the men would appear again after their identities had been verified.
