Dludlu & co. in first for Jazz Fest

2013-04-04 18:16

This weekend music lovers will get to witness history in the making as a South African jazz guitarist leads his international band in a live DVD recording at the Cape Town International Jazz festival.

The project is called Afri-Jazz and will be the festival’s first. Dludlu made the announcement to members of the media and gathered fans at a press conference in the Mother City today.

“People get tired and bored of hearing you play the same music, the same way all the time,” he said, explaining the collaboration with musicians from across the continent. They include Nigerian percussionists Abdul Ala Abdul Samed and Ayandare Ajayi Bolaji. Other band members will include the likes of Sisonke Xonti on saxophone, pianist Camillo Lombard and keyboardist Bokani Dyer, who won the 2011 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for jazz.

Dludlu, who cut his musical teeth playing as a sideman for the likes of Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, and Brenda Fassie, had words for young musicians too. “When we started out, we were trying to look for a unique sound. Many of these young musicians send their CDs or demos to record companies and radio stations which sound 90% American. Then no one will play their stuff cause it doesn’t sound original,” he said.

He warned up-and-coming musicians about cutthroat record executives and urged them to be true to themselves and the craft. “I try all my best to stay true to my music and myself. I’m Jimmy Dludlu, I have to focus on what I do best – the music.”

» Dludlu and his band will step onto the Kiepies Stage at 9:15pm on Saturday.
