The father of a one-year-old girl who was severely assaulted during a robbery on Thursday said doctors were “cautiously optimistic” about his daughter’s condition.

Marzaan Kruger’s father, Bertus, told Beeld he was relieved about the arrest of two suspects, aged 23 and 25, in connection with the robbery. They were due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. The pair, believed to have been builders at the Randburg home earlier this year, face charges of aggravated robbery and two attempted murder charges.

The men allegedly beat the baby girl into an unconscious state and pistol-whipped her minder, Francina Sekhu.

According to The Times , Sekhu had admitted to allowing one of the attackers into the home, because she thought he was her friend.

The Star reported that Sekhu was recovering well.
