Dodgy debt administrators

2011-02-02 10:24

This month’s articles on debt resulted in many emails from readers. The majority of them were either complaints about debt administrators or people struggling to cope financially.

Dodgy debt administrators
A complaint about debt administrators seems to be that even when you have settled your debts, these administrators still charge additional fees to remove your name from the Credit Bureau or fail to do so altogether.

City Press spoke to the National Credit Regulator on behalf of the readers but the regulator requires the complainants to contact the relevant authorities directly.

A good starting point is to call the Consumer Affairs Office in your area:

» Eastern Cape – 040 609 3663/3050

» Gauteng – 011 335 8006/8

» Mpumalanga – 013 752 3761

» Limpopo – 015 293 8300

» North West – 018 387 7700

» Free State – 051 400 4852

» Kwazulu-Natal – 033 264 2500

» Northern Cape – 053 830 4800

» Western Cape – 0800 007 081

You can also lodge a complaint with the National Credit Regulator at or call their number on 0860 627 627.

If you are struggling to get your name removed from a Credit Bureau, call the Credit Ombudsman on 0861 662 837.

Although the regulator would prefer consumers to follow the correct channels, if you are not receiving feedback or services from the relevant authorities we would like to hear from you.

Struggling to overcome debt

We also received many emails from readers who are in financial difficulty.

For example, Beauty is not coping with the management of her finances. Although she is employed, she has a credit card and two loans with different banks which she is struggling to repay.

Ntombekhaya has medical bills and children’s university fees to meet and cannot get on top of her debt. Beauty and Ntombekhaya are not alone. An estimated eight million South Africans are in the same situation.

If you find yourself in this position, call the National Debt Mediation Association on 086 111 6362 or SMS them on 32422.

The association has a call centre with staff qualified to assist you and offer advice.
This is a free service supported by the National Credit Regulator and major credit providers.
