Dog walks free despite being picked out in identity parade

2013-08-12 10:31

Sydney – A Jack Russell terrier accused of biting a jogger has walked free from a court in Hobart, Tasmania, despite being picked out in an identity parade arranged by the local dog catcher.

The Hobart Mercury reported today that five-year-old Jackie was fingered in a photo line-up of neighbourhood dogs that included known offenders.

After hearing testimony from the victim that she was not familiar with dog breeds, Magistrate Catherine Rheinberger gave Jackie the benefit of the doubt and dismissed the charges against the owner stemming from the February leg-biting incident.

Rheinberger was reported as saying that history had shown that witness identification was a vexed issue in cases involving people, let alone dogs, and that she was not satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Jackie was the dog in question.
