Double blow for Bafana defence

2015-01-26 20:42

Bafana Bafana could be without two defenders in their deciding Africa Cup of Nations match against Ghana tomorrow evening.

While Thulani Hlatshwayo has already been ruled out after he suffered a concussion in the match against Senegal on Friday, Rivaldo Coetzee also seems set to miss the match. Kickoff is at 8pm SA time.

Coetzee missed the match against Senegal after he was taken off the field in a stretcher in the opening match against Algeria with a knee injury.

Although he took part in yesterday’s training session – albeit jogging on the sidelines – coach Shakes Mashaba said it was a dicey situation but said they would apply their minds thoroughly before taking the final decision.

Mashaba said there were other factors which could work against the Ajax Cape Town defender, especially his level of fitness.

“We have not ruled him out as yet but he looks unlikely to play. It is a tough one because we don’t want him to break again although he said he felt no pain at all,” said Mashaba.

Ayanda Gcaba, who came on for Hlatshwayo against Senegal, will take his position in the team.

Mashaba says he is expecting an interesting game against the Black Stars as both teams are looking for a victory to stand a chance of advancing to the knockout stages of the tournament.

“The good thing is that all the teams will wait until the end of their games before they know if they made it or not. We know what we need to do and we are going for a win although it won’t be easy.”

He said he was happy with how his team had applied itself in the tournament despite not winning their opening two matches.

“This is going to be an end to the affair and an interesting game. Sparks are going to fly because we are all going to attack.”

He believes three goals might be enough to see Bafana through, depending on the outcome of the other game between Algeria and Senegal.
