Drive: What a trip

2010-09-24 13:31

Nothing shouts road trip like a

minibus and the Caravelle does a good job when it comes to loading people and

luggage. The seven-seater has sliding doors on both sides. There are two swivel

seats in the front row,

and an optional table, which can be placed between the two rows at the back. The

downside is that it’s a people-mover and one should not take it on a serious

off-roading excursion.

The Outlander

comes standard with a Rockford Fosgate sound system, a six-disc MP3-compatible

CD changer and nine speakers, including a pumping subwoofer in the boot, so

there’ll be plenty of singing along.

Unfortunately this

five-seater feels sluggish in automatic guise. It’s also a petrol-guzzler and

because it feels slow you find yourself pushing the accelerator harder, using

even more petrol.

Materia Turbo

Aimed at a younger crowd, this

little monster is a bunch of fun wrapped in metal. It has loads of leg and

head-room all round with enough luggage space for a weekend trip. However, some people think this five-seater looks

like a loaf of bread and that it’s ugly.

I love driving

double-cab bakkies purely because of their size and the torque from the engine

that makes for exhilarating off-roading.

Amarok comes

equipped with driver-assist programmes so basically it does all the work for you

even though it has a manual gearbox. Its load bin is also the widest, deepest

and longest in its class so you can take all sorts of holiday equipment with

passengers at the back might get a bit claustrophobic in

this five seater.

Not the prettiest, but this

five-seater is more for the businessman who wants to get rid of his suit and tie

for a holiday with the family. It’s a proper SUV with lots of loading space, the

right tools for off-roading, and features an online diary for people who just

can’t leave work at the office. The intelligent multimedia system can integrate

appointments in your diary and place them on the navigation system in case you

need to stop for any meetings or shopping.
