A driving school in Khayelitsha has been named after slain bride Anni Dewani to change the perception that townships are a breeding ground for criminals.
“This is a way of conveying a message to the community that what happened to Anni was wrong, and now we should show the positive side of life here,” project coordinator Bukiwe Maphapha told the Daily Voice.
“We already have people who have passed their learners and are looking forward to driving.”
The Anni Dewani Driving School had been open for three months and had taught many underprivileged youth and adults in Makhaya, Harare and Khayelitsha Site B, the newspaper reported today.
Six hundred learner drivers were already registered for free classes from Monday to Saturday.
The school was looking for cars they could use to learn to drive.
Dewani was shot dead in an apparent fake hijacking in Khayelitsha on November 14 2010.
Three men are already serving sentences for her murder.
Her husband Shrien Dewani, who has repeatedly denied masterminding a plot to kill his wife, is undergoing treatment in the UK for post-traumatic stress disorder.
He has been fighting extradition to South Africa for more than two years.
