Durban fraud accused bailed

2012-07-20 15:23

Eight people, among them a doctor and a pastor, have been granted bail in their fraud trial at the Durban Commercial Crimes Court.

The group was arrested during a two-day blitz this week after the police’s commercial crimes unit in Durban received a tip-off about an allegedly fraudulent R500 000 insurance claim.

First accused Shireen Wilkins (48) and her son Shiraz Wilkins (26) were released on R40 000 and R30 000 bail respectively.

It’s the State’s case that Wilkins was the sole beneficiary of the R500 000, which was paid out by 1Life Direct last month.

She allegedly used the money to pay part of her bond and to settle a municipal account.

The other accused are alleged to have helped Wilkins commit the alleged fraud – although two of them, Marlini Govender (25) and Wesley Rajbansee (22), appear to have become entangled in the scheme accidentally.

Govender and Rajbansee were implicated after their identity documents were allegedly used by Wilkins and her son.

They were released on R2 000 and R5 000 bail respectively.

City Press has learned that all eight intend to plead not guilty.

They were ordered by the court to hand in all passports and travel documents to the investigating officer.

They must report to their nearest police station every day beginning on Monday, until the case resumes on September 3.
