The City of Durban is set to host the World Beach Volleyball tournament from December 11-15.

This was announced at the official launch of the event which will see volleyball superstars from 64 teams across the planet converge on the land of King Shaka.

The event will be divided into a men’s and women’s division comprising 32 countries each.

According to the Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB), the sport has about 33 million licensed athletes across the globe.

Sascoc CEO Tubby Reddy said this would be the perfect moment to put SA sport on the map.

“If we are to host world events of bigger sports like the Olympics, we have to test our readiness with the not so popular codes,” said Reddy, who is also the head of Volleyball SA.

“We’re proud that we’ve reached this milestone and there wouldn’t be a better venue than Durban to host this, which has the best weather compared to its coastal counterparts.”

All matches will take place at Durban’s New Beach.

Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula, who was scheduled to attend the event, did not show up as he was said to have missed his flight from Bloemfontein.
