Dutch in talks with SA about piracy suspects

2010-11-27 09:46

The Hague – The Dutch navy has captured 20 suspected pirates off the Somali coast in the past week and is holding them on a warship on suspicion of involvement in hijacking a South African yacht.

The defence ministry said the suspects were arrested in two separate operations by navy supply ship Amsterdam.

National Prosecutors’ Office spokesperson Wim de Bruin said yesterday Dutch diplomats were in talks with South African authorities about the possibility of handing over the suspects for trial.

The Yacht, Choizil, was hijacked late last month and run aground by pirates on November 7.

A South African couple was taken to land and were still being held hostage but the skipper remained on board and was later picked up by the French navy.
