EFF, DA united by animosity towards ANC – Mantashe

2014-09-22 13:13

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe has called the cooperation between opposition parties like the Economic Freedom Fighters and the Democratic Alliance a “counter-revolutionary” and “right wing coalition”.

Addressing journalists in the ANC’s Luthuli House headquarters this morning, following a weekend meeting by the national executive committee, Mantashe said they were united by their “common animosity towards the ANC”.

He said “hooliganism and insult are at unprecedented levels” and are closing the space for depart in Parliament.

“The decorum and dignity of Parliament as an institution is being dragged through the mud under the cover of the right to be robust,” he said.

Mantashe added “there is nothing robust about showing the middle finger to the deputy president”, in reference to EFF chief whip Floyd Shivambu’s actions in the National Assembly last week.

Mantashe also sought to clarify what the ANC meant in a weekend statement in which the party said Zuma and Ramaphosa should be protected from humiliation and embarrassment in Parliament.

He said this did not amount to shielding them from accountability or answering questions. Mantashe also said parliament should enforce its rules harshly to restore order.

But Mantashe did say more government imbizos and ANC Imvuselelo (renewal) campaigns should be held so that Zuma, Ramaphosa and ministers can engage directly with “the people”.

Mantashe said the NEC also discussed a report by the ANC’s integrity committee, and he confirmed that the fraud case of NEC member Pule Mabe, who is also a candidate for ANC Youth League leader, is being handled by the committee.

Mantashe also said the NEC sent its condolences to the families of the victims of the recent Nigeria church disaster.
